Why the arrival time looks five hours later
France is one hour ahead of the UK. Departure and arrival times are printed in each port’s local time. A ferry leaving Newhaven at 11:00 UK time and arriving in Dieppe at 16:00 French time has taken four hours, not five. The night example reaches Dieppe the following calendar day.

Check-in: the time that matters first
DFDS says check-in on the route closes 45 minutes before scheduled departure in both directions. That is the last check-in time, not a good target for arriving at the terminal. Your booking confirmation lists the times for your specific crossing, and you still need to pass the relevant checks before boarding.

Peak season: will the ferry be delayed?
Summer and school-holiday travel can mean more vehicles and passengers reaching check-in at similar times. That can lengthen the time needed to get through the port even when the ferry itself is on schedule. A late train, slow road approach, check-in queue or border check is a different problem from a delayed departure.

A delayed ship does not automatically extend check-in. Follow the cutoff in your confirmation unless DFDS directly tells you it has changed. In a busy period, plan to be at the port substantially earlier and follow the operator’s current arrival advice for your booking.
Day crossing or overnight ferry?
Daytime sailing
Allow roughly four hours on board, then add the journey to and from both ports. It can fit neatly between a drive in England and a drive in France, but check how late you actually reach your accommodation.
Night sailing
Some overnight crossings are scheduled longer. Check the exact duration and next-day arrival on your ticket; a cabin can make the trip more comfortable, but an early landing may leave a gap before trains or hotel check-in.
After arrival: leave a real buffer
The arrival time is when the ferry is scheduled to reach port, not when you stand on a station platform. At Newhaven, use Newhaven Town station; at Dieppe, the station is in town rather than beside the ferry terminal, with a shuttle connection.
