This is a workable ferry trip without a car, but the two ends are different. Newhaven Town station is beside the UK check-in area; in Dieppe you need a shuttle, taxi or walk between the terminal and town. Plan the whole station-to-station journey.

1. Use Newhaven Town station

Southern Railway says it is less than a five-minute walk from Newhaven Town station to ferry check-in. National Rail advises ferry passengers to use Town rather than Newhaven Harbour, despite the tempting name. You buy the train and ferry separately. Leave time for any rail delay and for check-in after the short walk.

2. Check in as a foot passenger

Have your booking reference and the required travel documents for every passenger ready. Follow DFDS’s foot passenger instructions at the terminal; the route accepts travellers without vehicles. Read the deadline on your confirmation and arrive comfortably before it. If you are taking a bicycle, select the bicycle option in your booking and follow port staff directions rather than joining the foot passenger flow on your own.

3. Separate large luggage from essentials

DFDS asks foot passengers to put bags larger than 56 × 45 × 25 cm in dedicated baggage storage onboard. Keep passports, medication, wallet, phone, charger and a warm layer in a smaller bag. You may need your documents again as soon as you disembark.

4. Transfer from Dieppe ferry terminal

Dieppe’s tourism office describes a shuttle between the ferry terminal, town centre and the rail/bus station. Its current information lists a fare of €3 for adults, €1.50 for ages 4–17 and no fare for children under 3; it says payment is made to the driver in cash. Check the latest timetable and fares before travel. The shuttle meets ferry passengers, but you should still allow time to disembark and pass controls before any onward train.

Walking from Dieppe town centre to the terminal takes about 20–30 minutes according to DFDS. That can be a pleasant option with light luggage; a shuttle or taxi is easier with large bags, children or poor weather. Watch for port road and bridge diversions.

Returning from Dieppe

Reverse the plan: get from Dieppe station or town to the ferry terminal before check-in closes, sail to Newhaven, pass UK border controls, then walk to Newhaven Town station. Do not book a tight connection based on the scheduled docking time. Read the timing guide for the time-zone change.

Travelling with a bicycle or pet

Book a bicycle in the right travel category. Foot passengers may take a pet on this route, but DFDS requires advance arrangements such as a kennel or an available pet cabin. Check the operator’s pet rules and the animal’s entry documents before booking the train connection. A regular passenger ticket alone does not reserve pet accommodation.
