Coming by train: get off at Newhaven Town
Southern Railway describes ferry check-in as less than a five-minute walk from Newhaven Town. National Rail explicitly advises ferry passengers to use that station rather than Newhaven Harbour: the terminal is no longer beside the Harbour station. The short walk does not replace the time required for check-in and border formalities.
Coming by car, motorhome or bike
Follow signs for the DFDS passenger ferry and join the lane appropriate to your booking. Make sure you booked the right vehicle type and dimensions, counting anything fixed to it: a roof box increases height and a rear bike rack or trailer increases length. Cyclists should follow the instructions for bicycle passengers at the terminal. Do not assume the car and foot passenger entrances are the same.
Before you enter the vehicle queue: put passports, booking details, medicines, children’s essentials and anything you need onboard together. The vehicle deck is normally closed to passengers during the sailing. Note where you parked on the ship before going upstairs.
How early should I arrive?
DFDS says check-in closes 45 minutes before departure on this route. Use the exact deadline on your booking confirmation and aim for a comfortable margin before it. A queue or a wrong turn around the port can use up time quickly. Border checks happen as part of the journey, so keep travel documents available for everyone in the vehicle, including children.
Can I leave a car at Newhaven?
DFDS lists parking at the terminal. Check the operator’s current parking information for availability, price and opening arrangements before planning a multi-day stay. Parking a car and boarding as a foot passenger are two separate parts of the journey; allow time to move between them.
What happens after you board?
Once onboard, use a reclining lounge seat or a pre-booked cabin. DFDS lists food, a shop and family facilities. The crossing to Dieppe takes about four hours on many sailings, with some night crossings longer. The printed arrival is in French local time, one hour ahead of the UK. The Dieppe terminal is away from its railway station. Drivers should follow the exit signs and switch to driving on the right; foot passengers can use the ferry shuttle towards town. Allow for disembarkation and border checks before your next train or appointment.
